An Overview of Aereth’s Lands

Aereth is a habitable moon that orbits Gwydion, the second planet in the Belenus solar system. It is the largest and most distant of Gwydion's moons. Aereth is a stunning earth-like moon and the only place in the solar system where life can be found. But, Aereth is not Earth. In fact, it and its solar system are in a galaxy located in a universe in another realm entirely. In the Allverse, Aereth's universe, the Laws of Physics, and the Laws of Magic share the task of making the universe work.

You might want to read through the  Solar System document to get an overview of how it all works.

Like Earth, Aereth is over 70% water with numerous continents and islands. It is extremely geologically active with several earthquake zones and numerous volcanoes and volcanic mountain ranges. Aereth is strategically balanced between its orbit around Gwydion and Gwydion's orbit around Bel (the sun). Many regions experience distinct seasons and have unique climates. However, there are also hot, dry deserts and icy cold polar deserts.

This document is a short overview of each of Aereth's major known landmasses, where the primary nations are located, and which races are where. There is room to develop other cultures within the major nations and the game managers will always consider adding more.

Playable?: Yes

We are starting with Bassilith since it will be where most of the in-character activity will initially take place. The primary character races you should consider are: Dragons, Gwerin, Morrighan (dragonriders), Murians (humans), Wyr, Dwarrow. If you want to know more about Bassilith, check out the Dragons and Gwerin documents.

At a Glance

Bassilith is a large island that lays just off the west coast of Vendia (another continent). In size, it could almost be considered a small island-continent. It is the primary homeland of the dragons and the Gwerin. The oldest dragon siege is located on Bassilith.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

Large and situated just off the western coast of Vendia. Although most people consider it an island, during very low tides a person can walk or ride a horse from the mainland, over the barrier islets and onto Bassilith - providing they can elude the guardians of this land, the Wyr.

Climate

Temperate rainforest, not unlike earth's Pacific Northwest. The weather is frequently stormy thanks to the fact that Bassilith lies within the Ocean of Storms. The main difference between it and Earth's Pacific Northwest is that there are more sunny days although most do start with rain and drizzle.

Terrain

Bassilith is very mountainous with steep cliffs that run down to the ocean's edge. There are numerous mountain valleys and a few low-lying areas suitable for farming or raising livestock. On the western side of Bassilith lies the great inland sea known as the Burning Sea.

Geology

Bassilith is highly volcanic and prone to earthquakes. The Burning Sea was created from the collapse of a massive volcano after it erupted during the destruction of the western continent of Uthuria. The caldera was filled by the sea during the subsequent tsunamis. The volcano beneath the Burning Sea is still active evidenced by the water's warmer than normal temperatures.

Population Centers

Siege Perilous, Annwyn Court, Port Duskhallow, Caer Draenar.

Common Races/Species

Dragons, Gwerin, Wyr (85%)

Murians, Other (15%)

Playable?: Yes

This is the second land area that will get significant amounts of play.

At a Glance

Vendia is a super-large continent directly to the east of Bassilith and is the home to several nations and races.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

In total land area, Vendia is second only to Lemuria, the vast southern supercontinent. It lays west of the island of Bassilith and east of Eirares.

Climate

Due to its size, there are several climate regions from arctic to desert wastes. There are seasonal variations as well.

Terrain

Vendia is very mountainous but also has swaths of plains and other flatlands.

Geology

The west coast is more seismically and volcanically active than the Mid-Lands except for the Rift Valley. This is an area, approximately mid-continent, that is slowly rifting apart. There are several volcanoes in the rift and it is highly earthquake prone. There are also volcanic ranges in the extreme north and south.

Population Centers

Vendia is probably the most populated of all of the continents except for Xia. Several nations and races make their home on the continent. Nordheim stretches across the northern climes and is home to a hardy, intrepid race of seafarers. With the fall of Uthuria, the Dwarrow now make their home in the mountains of Tynar-Dazûr on the west coast. East of the rift and occupying the majority of the continent is the Kingdom of Vales.

Common Races/Species

Vendia is home to almost all races: Dragons, Dwarrow, Gwerin, Wyr, Murians (Aereth humans), Travelers (Earth humans), and Sedayin (the Elfkin).

Every world needs a den of thievery, pirates, and other nefarious doings. This would be the Howling Islands.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

The Howling Islands are a large island archipelago that lies to the south of Bassilith and Vendia.

Climate

The climate of the area is tropical, varying from tropical rainforest in some areas to tropical monsoon and tropical savanna in others. There are also some locations that are arid climates with considerable drought in some years, and the peaks of mountains tend to have cooler temperate climates.

Terrain

The terrain of the Howling Islands ranges from very rugged and mountainous to nearly flat. Many of the islands have areas that have been sculpted by the near constant wings into natural arches and land bridges. Around the coasts are jagged sea karst formations. Many of these have also been formed by wind and wave into arches. This vast quantity of arches on land and sea give the islands their name since the wind almost always howls.

Geology

A few of the islands are still volcanic and the region is prone to major earthquakes in the surrounding ocean. There are several deep ocean trenches which can produce mega-earthquakes although these are relatively rare.

Population Centers

The Howling Islands is home to the Howling pirates known as the Howlers. They are primarily Murian although there is a smattering of other races, disenfranchised people that have found a home amongst the brutal pirates. The Howling Islands do not have any dragons or dragon sieges.

Common Races/Species

Predominately Murian. However, man of the Grayborn have made their home amongst the Howlers also.

Playable?: Extremely Limited

Due to the nature of these characters, it is usually best to have the character having relocated away from Hy-Brasil.

Other Names

Glass Island, Floating Island

At a Glance

Hy-Brasil is a very mysterious island that most people avoid. It is home to an equally mysterious group of people known as the People of the Green Silences. They are also often referred to as The Old Race.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

Hy-Basil is a fairly large island located almost exactly halfway between Vendia and Eirares.

Climate

Temperate maritime. The northern areas and the higher mountains can have harsh winters.

Terrain

Mountainous around the coasts with a large central valley, densely forested.

Geology

Hy-Brasil has a very stable geology although minor earthquakes do occur and it is believed there are a couple of undersea volcanoes to the west of the island.

Population Centers

Valley of Green Silences

Common Races/Species

Less is known about the People of the Green Silences than is known about the dragons. The Old Race is a mysterious people that do not claim to belong to one specific race. It is known that a large number of talented healers and magic-users come from the island. This rumor of it being home to witches and powerful sorcerers makes it suspect in the eyes of many of the other races.

Empire of Ashes

At a Glance

Based on the ruins of vast cities and monuments, it is believed that Eirares was once the home to fairly advanced civilizations. However, it is mostly a tribal realm. Many of the tribes are nomadic, following the migrations of the various prey animals or migrating with their own livestock to better grazing lands. There is trade amongst the tribes, but there is also a history of brief wars as well. Few people from the western lands want to venture into the dark, haunted forests of Eirares.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

Eirares is a large continent comparable to western Europe in location and size. It lays almost directly east of the continent of Vendia.

Climate

The climate of Eirares ranges from temperate to semi-dry and somewhat arid in the extreme south.

Terrain

Most of the continent is rugged and densely forested with a few mountain ranges. There are numerous wide, slow-flowing, meandering rivers that have arable land around them.

Geology

The geology of Eirares is fairly stable with a few earthquakes along its southern coastal regions. There are also a couple of fairly active volcanoes in that region. Evidence of past volcanic activity can be found in numerous hot springs that dot the land.

Population Centers

Populations tend to cling to the coastal and river regions.

Common Races/Species

Predominately Murian and Traveler. Although there are pockets of other races, there is little interaction between them and the various Eirares' tribes. There are a couple of dragon sieges high in the untraveled areas of the mountains. However, the sieges are barely outposts and there are no associated Gwerin courts.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

Large subcontinent to the west of Xia and separated by the ocean from Eirares in the east.

Climate

Due to the massively tall mountains in the east, most of Iaphios is desert dotted with large oases. The coastal areas are the most habitable with milder monsoon-type climates.

Terrain

Mainly mountains and sand, reminiscent of Arabia's Empty Quarter.

Geology

Stable, some earthquake activity in the foothills of the Kinderlier Mountain Range.

Population Centers

Settlements will spring up around the larger oases. However, since the fall of Cal'dyra, there have been no large-scale permanent settlements on Iaphios. Most of the people are like the Bedouin of Earth, content to follow a nomadic lifestyle.

Common Races/Species

Badawī (desert dweller) is a Murian race that inhabits Iaphios. There are a smattering of other species that include dragons and Gwerin in the heights of the Kinderliers.

Playable?: Limited

At a Glance

Xia is a large continent that is still attached to its neighbor, Iaphios, by a narrow strip of land. In time, it will separate entirely and become another subcontinent.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

Fairly large continent in the far east.

Climate

Varies from green and verdant to mostly arid in the shadow of the Dahei Range that was part of the Kinderliers until the continent rifted apart.

Terrain

Varies.

Geology

Highly earthquake prone in the coastal regions and near the Dahei Range.

Population Centers

Mainly along the coasts and river deltas. Specific city names will be added later.

Common Races/Species

The majority of the people are descended from a mix of Murian and oriental Travelers (earth humans). The primary culture is very oriental in nature. The people are rather advanced although the land is still governed by various warlords known as the Khans. There are a couple of well-established sieges with associated Gwerin courts. The Morrighan have a strong presence in Xia although they must tread with caution.

Playable?: No

For now, it can be mentioned and your character can hale from there.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

Large, almost supercontinent in size, land in the southern hemisphere.

Climate

The climate of Lemuria is significantly influenced by ocean currents, and a southern oscillation, which is correlated with periodic drought, and the seasonal tropical low-pressure system that produces cyclones in the north. These factors cause rainfall to vary markedly from year to year. Much of the northern part of the continent has a tropical, predominantly summer-rainfall (monsoon). The south-west corner of the country has a Mediterranean climate. The south-east ranges from oceanic to humid subtropical, with the highlands featuring alpine and subpolar oceanic climates. The interior is arid to semi-arid.

The Amber Islands are one of the old homelands of the Wyr. Situated far out in the Western Sea, they have been inaccessible since a terrible war and tragedy occurred on the island. The outer Islands, known to daring seamen as the “Isles of Madmen” are still inhabited by Wyr left unstable by the events. Older survivors may have stories of what transpired there, colourful and often gory, but usually keep those tales among themselves. It’s been more than a century that the last Wyr coming from these parts were sighted, and it is an agreement of all Wyr that it is not likely for any to come from there any time soon.

Geography & Geology

Size & Location

Small island chain far to the west of Bassilith.

Climate

TBD

Terrain

Mostly mountainous.

Geology

The Amber Islands were created by the destruction of the continent of Uthuria. They are actually the highest mountain peaks in the east, turned into islands by the cataclysm. Although thousands of years have passed since Uthuria fell, earthquakes are often felt.
